In September of 1940, an 18-year-old mechanic named Marcel Ravidat was walking his dog, Robot, in the countryside of Southwestern France when the dog disappeared down a hole. Robot eventually returned but the next day, Ravidat went to the spot with three friends to explore the hole.
And after quite a bit of digging, they discovered a cave with walls covered with paintings, including over 900 paintings of animals, horses, stags, bison and also species that are now extinct, including a wooly rhinoceros. The paintings were astonishingly detailed and vivid with red, yellow and black paint made from pulverized mineral pigments that were usually blown through a narrow tube, possibly a hollowed bone, onto the walls of the cave. It would eventually be established that these artworks were at least 17,000 years old.

Ohai everybody! Something different today, make sure to watch it to the end! John Green is reading one of his reviews of our modern world, from his Podcast The Anthropocene Reviewed, which you should check out! https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/anthropocene-reviewed I haven't said this often enough publicly, but John and Hank Green, the Vlogbrothers and first generation science Youtubers are the reason Kurzgesagt exists today. In the very literal sense, that when I saw the first episode of Crash Course World History as a student in university I decided to try to do something similar. Doing Kurzgesagt was very hard for the first few years, for a variety of reasons. What made it easier was the kind advice and real world help we got from John and Hank to make this channel work and not burn out. Over the years we became friends – and to me the genuine nature of their work is still inspiring. My team and I try to do the same with Kurzgesagt. To be driven by the values we believe in and not by the outside world. So when John asked me if we maybe would illustrate and animate one of his essays, it was an easy yes. This is the result and we hope you like it. Thank you for watching and reading – Philipp

It is incredibly ironic to watch a video about climate change, then the next video I watch from the same channel is preceded by a Trump campaign ad. Do creators have any control over the ads that run on their channel? Would anyone smart enough to enjoy a Kurzgesagt video vote for Trump?

Good thing the cave was in France. Not all of our collective humanity would have protected the art. And we all can have a pretty accurate guess at which modern cultures would have either destroyed it or made off with it.

Beautifully said. To give a little perspective on the paintings of so many millennia ago, consider this: human art from ten and fifteen thousand years later, at least in the realm of naturalistically portrayed animals and nature was vastly inferior to those ancient cave paintings. Consider so many artifacts you might have seen that were utterly primitive in comparison to the animals on the Lascaux and other caves in the region. Even Egyptian artists who decorated the insides of pyramids and built massive sculpture four and five thousand years ago didn't have that level of mastery. To someone utterly naive of the subject, it would probably appear as though the Lascaux paintings were the more recent and sophisticated works compared to bronze and early iron age art. It wasn't until the Roman era that more modern humans began to approach the level of artistic sophistication in portrayals of nature on the walls of Lascaux. To an artist, which I am, it's amazing that there was such a dearth of artistic skill for so many thousands of years. Those cave paintings still have a spark of vibrant life that is unmatched by most more recent art, and which evokes wonder in most who see them. I also strongly recommend that interested folks see the Werner Herzog documentary "Cave of Forgotten Dreams." Aside from the fact that every Herzog film, whether drama or documentary is a work of visual genius, this film records the last images allowed to be taken by anyone before the Chauvet caves in France were closed forever, for the same reasons as the Lascaux were closed. And the genius of Herzog never shines more than in this film. More remarkable still, the paintings inside the Chauvet caves were dated to be literally twice as old as those in Lascaux. Which makes them more remarkable still. At least 32000 years ago humanity displayed a mastery of the medium that would be lost for millenia, only to re-emerge in the much more recent past. It's for that very reason the paintings, and those in the Altamira cave in Spain, were denounced as frauds and forgeries for decades before the authorities finally accepted the shocking truth: in at least this one way prehistoric man had a sophistication that most assumed had only arisen in the last three thousand years or so.
